[Editor’s Note - This request has been revised for clarity. The sender indicated in the “start date” / “end date” section of our request form that the responsive information requested should include the timeline 06/01/19 - 04/15/20].

Hello Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,

I’d like to make a public records request for the following information:

This is a request to gather data and statistics not currently listed on cdc.gov related to national EVALI diagnosis rates studied by the CDC in the U.S. from Summer 2019 to Winter 2020.

I’d like to request all CDC EVALI study details, including breakdown of diagnosis rates, hospitalization rates, mortality rates, and details of lung tissue analysis of EVALI diagnosed patients (I.e. rate of concurrent viral presence detected in samples from EVALI patients and/or autopsies) from 06/01/19 - 04/15/20.

I believe that the study contact is [email protected]. However, if there is a more appropriate party that should be contacted for assistance with the request, please indicate to whom / what email the request should be sent.

Thank you for your assistance!

Hi, Sorry for the dilatory reply. We are seeing how big a record set is involved and how long it will take to pull the records you requested. We can then determine if you have exceeded 2 hours of free search time and will incur costs.

    Good morning Mr. Conant,

Happy Monday! Thank you for your response. I will log in your request seeking federal records.

Scope: All CDC EVALI study details, including breakdown of diagnosis rates, hospitalization rates, mortality rates, and details of lung tissue analysis of EVALI diagnosed patients (i.e. rate of concurrent viral presence detected in samples from EVALI patients and/or autopsies)

    Timeframe: 06/01/2019 – 04/15/2020

Very soon, you will be receiving an official letter from our office acknowledging the receipt of the aforementioned request. Said letter will also convey to you any information we may require to adequately process your request.

Just so you know, as a federal agency, we are not bound by state laws. Therefore, if you seek NC records, you would need to submit a NC Public Records Request with NC directly.

    Thank you for your time.

    Good afternoon,

    Thank you for your reply!

We are located in North Carolina and are most familiar with public records laws in NC. The purpose of our website, and our intention with this request, is to submit a “public records request” – we’ve never processed a request related to this specific subject matter, so we’re not certain to whom / where is the best place to submit the request. However, whether you want to consider it a FOIA request, or public records request, in the interest of getting it fulfilled on our site, please consider that this request is made by Patrick Conant, who is the director of Sunshine Request. His address is PO Box 17391, Asheville, NC 28816.

    Thank you!
    Have a good weekend,
    Sunshine Request

Good morning Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,

We’ve received a new public records request via our website www.sunshinerequest.com for information that may be available in your office.

I work for a website called Sunshine Request www.sunshinerequest.com. We built a site that makes it easier to make public records requests by filling out a simple form, and the results of any requests are posted on our site. This allows citizens to learn more about our local government, while saving staff from having to fulfill duplicate requests. If you have any questions about the project, please let me know, and I’ll be happy to answer.

Please confirm receipt to let us know the request will begin processing, and if possible, please provide a rough estimate of when the request may be completed. We will plan on following up again around that time.

Here are the details of the request:
