Herbicides usage by Buncombe County Parks and Recreation Department

Hello,

I would like an accounting of herbicide usage by the Buncombe County Parks and Recreation Department. I’d like to specifically request the types, brand names (if applicable), as well as the amounts used per park area.

With herbicide runoff following heavy rains that we have been experiencing, this is a dire concern for the water quality of our streams and rivers.

Thank you!

Hello Sunshine Request, in response to your question below, the following is information I have gathered. Lake Julian Park is the only facility that the Buncombe County Parks and Recreation Department applies herbicides to on their own. They use Round Up to prevent damage to the hard surfaces at the park from weed penetration. They typically use one standard container a year.

Additionally, Buncombe County Grounds Services applies herbicides to some parks. They use Roundup 50.2% Glyphosate. Mix is 2.5oz per/gallon. They use approximately 35 gallons per/year spread out over the following parks.

    Hominy Creek Park

    Glenn Bridge Park

    Buncombe County Sports Park

    Walnut Island Park

    Alexander Park

    Ledges Park

    Karpen Park

    Cane Creek Park

    Lake Julian Park

    Owen Park
