(March 2025) Request for The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction: Names and monthly salaries of all NC Public School District’s PIOs. As of present day.

SUBJECT:
(March 2025) Request for The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction: Names and monthly salaries of all NC Public School District’s PIOs. As of present day.

MESSAGE:
Good afternoon NC DPI (Records Officer / Custodian(s) of these Records),

Please reply promptly to the following public records request, which I’m making in accordance with NC Public Records Law. https://www.ncleg.net/enactedlegislation/statutes/html/bychapter/chapter_132.html

The type of basic salary data I’m requesting is very commonly produced, and is widely considered a matter of public record as part of the public personnel file of employees. Many NC entities fulfill requests like this via email in 1 week, and in many cases 1 day.

Please provide the names and monthly salaries of every current NC Public School District’s “Public Information Officer”, as of the present day [on the date the query is performed]. To be clear – I am not asking for the names and salaries of every PIO working at every single County Public School in NC. I’m only asking for those PIOs who are working at the “Central Office” or “District-wide” level. Please include the following:

1) Employee first / last name
2) Date of hire
3) Position / title / department
4) Monthly Salary [please include hourly wage, hourly rate, or monthly salary -- whichever payment structure is applicable to the employee]

Ideally, I’d like to receive the responsive records in an Excel or other machine-readable format. If any / all of this info is already publicly available online, please provide a link to where it can be accessed.
————————————

Please note that by submitting this request, I’m NOT agreeing to pay any potential fees or associated costs related to my request. If it isn’t possible to process the request without incurring fees, then please let me know the itemized potential cost and clear explanations of those charges upfront, and DO NOT proceed until I respond.

By Law I’m not required to provide a name or address to associate with a public records request. However, in order to move things along I’d like to clarify that this request is being made by:

Sunshine Request
PO Box 17391
Asheville, NC 28816

The request has been sent solely by me and my email address [email protected] . If anyone other than that email address contacts you to pursue a similar request, it did not come from me. Please do not commingle or treat that as an alteration or cancellation of my request – I intend to continue to pursue my request.

Thank you for your assistance!

Editor’s Note: Sunshine Request makes no claim as to the veracity of any statements or information contained in any of the requests, or public records, we receive.

Editor’s Note 03/07/25: The original submission we received has been revised for clarity.

Sunshine Request will not fulfill the following types of requests:

☀️ Requests that are incomplete, non-specific, or vague.

While we do proofread requests we receive for general spelling and clarity, we may choose not to fulfill the request if it is incomplete, or it is unclear what specific information the requester hopes to receive. In this case, the sender may rewrite and resubmit the request.

It’s the requester’s responsibility to write the request in a manner that clearly specifies a record that is being requested, and to what government entity it should be sent.

☀️ Please be specific:

It is important that what you are requesting is specific and reasonable, and is an actionable records request. Please specify the exact type of records you’d like to receive, rather than any “possible” or “potential” info that could be searched. Remember that the larger your request, the more time it usually takes to fulfill. Specificity will often help reduce the amount of time needed to process the request.

It is important that a request has a clearly written and complete Subject and Message, and also specifies the Government Entity (or entities), City and/or County, and State to which the request should be sent. If applicable, please also include any responsive timelines for the info that should be requested.

While we do proofread requests we receive for general spelling and clarity, we may choose not to fulfill the request if it is incomplete, or it is unclear what specific info the requester hopes to receive, or if it violates our policies.

Before submitting a request, please take a moment to review our tips for How to write and make a successful request. If you have additional questions about our site or how to make requests, please check out our FAQs or Policies page.

☀️ Code of Conduct: Please do not use Sunshine Request or any of the results of public records requests to harass government entities / employees, businesses, private citizens / individuals, or otherwise.

☀️ Please note that we cannot pay any fees / associated costs related to any of the requests on our site. If it is not possible for a Government Agency to process our request without incurring fees, then it is the responsibility of that Agency to let us know what the potential costs may be — at which point we will ask that they cease processing the request. We will mark the request as “Completed” on our site, and the sender can contact the Government Agency directly, should they wish to further pursue a request.

Thank you for using Sunshine Request!

    Good afternoon,

    Thank you for your reply.

I will now mark this request as “Completed”.

Have a great rest of your day!

    ~ The Sunshine Request Team

Editor’s Note to Sender: According to Google, North Carolina has“115 local public school districts”. Within each district, there are multiple different elementary, middle, and high schools. Based on the response provided to us by the NC DPI, it seems the sender may need to submit more than 115 individual requests, one to every NC Public School District (or each individual school) you’d like to receive salary data from.

** That being said, please note:

Sunshine Request is a site built to make requests for public records (recorded info such as documents, emails, and data sets) to government entities. We are a small 3-person team, running the website in addition to our primary business. Due to our availability, the volume of requests we receive, and the time required to fulfill each one — our focus is on fulfilling requests which are in the public interest, and evaluating if there is a public benefit to that info being available.

We do not have the capacity to submit 115 similar requests to different entities. It would take us several months or more to do so, while also processing all other requests we receive through our site. We would recommend that the sender reaches out directly to the appropriate Government entity (or entities) for assistance with future requests, if multiple requests need to be made.

Thank you for using Sunshine Request!

There are no records responsive to your request. The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction does not maintain employment records such as salaries of individuals employed by Local Education Agencies (LEAs). You would be able to obtain this information directly from each LEA. You may find the Educational Directory and Demographical Information Exchange (EDDIE) to be a helpful resource.

Thank you, and have a great day!
